Snookers great entertainers were mercurial talents, none more so than the Great Ronnie O’Sullivan and previously the bewildering Alex Higgins.
Higgins was a two time world champion who was aptly dubbed The Hurricane would stoke fear into his opponents and leave destruction in his wake. He was a flawed genius who became the first qualifier in history to become world champion at the age of 22.
Ronnie O’Sullivan quickly ascended to the pinnacle of the sport and became the youngest player to win the UK Championship at the age of 18.
Nicknamed The Rocket for his rapid playing style, he dazzled onlookers at the 1997 World Championship by clearing the table in 5 minutes and 20 seconds for the fastest recorded maximum break in history.
O’Sullivan went on to win 7 world championships and counting and continues to entertain with his speed of play and versatility, often playing both right and left handed as the situation calls.
I wonder what Alex Higgins would have thought of that?
Both men struggled with drugs and mental illness but amongst the chaos have gained reputations as two of the most influential players to ever pick up a cue.
“He made snooker Sexy. He was our George Best, and every sport needs a character and snooker was lucky to have Alex Higgins”
